Wanted: Young, Fresh Voices – 18 and Under
If you happen to be a poet, Chicago is the place to be. Not only is the city home to institutions like the Poetry Foundation and the Poetry Center, Chicago is also the birthplace of the slam poetry movement. Poets like Carl Sandburg and Gwendolyn Brooks helped give Chicago the lyrical reputation it enjoys today.
Come and show me another city with lifted head singing
so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.
Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job,
here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;
– Carl Sandburg, “Chicago“
The Bucktown Arts Fest is committed to keeping that poetic dream alive – and hopes to inspire kids and young adults to share their passion, their joys and their sorrows with us in verse. We can’t wait to hear the fresh new voices they have in store.
